Formerly known as "Nangangzi Village," this area became the birthplace of Baozhong tea cultivation during the late Qing Dynasty, due to its favorable soil and climate. To improve the quality of tea, the Japanese established a Baozhong tea production research center in the Nangang Dakeng area during the Japanese colonial period, holding workshops for over a decade. After the industry declined, it was replaced by coal mining and brick-making. To revitalize the economy, the area was designated as an industrial zone in 1956, attracting numerous factories, which brought prosperity but also the environmental cost of being dubbed the "black village" due to pollution. In recent years, with changes in the industrial environment, several urban renewal projects have been launched, and Nangang has undergone a transformation into a key commercial and office district.
