Formerly known as " Tāi-an-chng," this area was once a dispersed agricultural settlement primarily cultivating rice and vegetables. During the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods of the Qing dynasty, the reliance on rainwater ponds for irrigation proved insufficient for farming needs, leading to the construction of the Seventh Canal and Liugong Canal. The extensive network of canals and reservoirs boosted agricultural prosperity. In 1928, the Japanese government established Taihoku Imperial University (now National Taiwan University), marking the beginning of an influx of educational institutions. With the growth of academic resources, the area evolved into a renowned cultural and educational district.
