Due to the presence of several small basins in the area, it was historically referred to as "Hu" in Hokkien, meaning "inner basin." The indigenous Ketagalan people originally settled near the water, engaging in mixed farming and livestock raising. During the Kangxi and Qianlong periods of the Qing dynasty, Han settlers arrived, constructing irrigation canals and converting the plains into rice fields, making agriculture the primary industry. In modern times, the district became renowned for strawberries, shiitake mushrooms, and flowers. However, with the sharp decline in the farming population, commercial office buildings and media companies began moving in after 1996, transforming the area into the Neihu Technology Park. Locals often describe this transformation as "water buffalo turning into a computer mouse."
