The indigenous Basay people who originally inhabited this area believed that the steaming Geothermal Valley was the result of a witch's sorcery. They called it PATAW (Badao) in their language, which later evolved into "Beitou" due to its phonetic similarity in Taiwanese Hokkien. Rich in sulfur, this district is the birthplace of Taiwan’s hot spring culture, with the first hot spring inn, Tenguan (Tengu-an), established here. The district's topography spans a 10-kilometer stretch from mountains exceeding 1,000 meters in elevation to the Guandu Plain, which is nearly at sea level, fostering a diverse and rich natural landscape.
